Free seminar on deferred deportation in Nassau Thursday

Immigration attorneys on Thursday will discuss a “deferred action” federal policy for young undocumented immigrants seeking to avoid deportation that was authorized in June by President Barack Obama.

The free seminar will be hosted by the Nassau County Bar Association to provide reliable information on “who’s eligible for it, how to apply for it and what are the risks or benefits” for applicants, said  bar association marketing director Valerie Zurblis.

Deferred action is an act of prosecutorial discretion intended to help young undocumented immigrants who arrived in the United States before age 16 and were younger than 31 as of June 15. Those granted the deferrals will avoid deportation and may be authorized to work in the country for a renewable period of two years.

The seminar, set to start at 6 p.m., will take place at the association’s office, on the corner of 15th and West streets in Mineola. Participants need to call ahead to register at 516-747-4070.
