Freeport will host its second annual Peace March on Saturday morning. Last year the event drew about 1,000 people, according to Freeport school district Superintendent Kishore Kuncham.

The march, which will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Freeport High School, aims to “promote peace and nonviolence,” Kuncham said.

“Often Freeport gets a bad rap for things that don’t even happen in Freeport,” he said. “We want to change the image and promote a new Freeport and the ideals of Ghandi and Martin Luther King to continue throughout the year, not only in Freeport but beyond Freeport.”

Marchers are encouraged to wear yellow. The march will proceed east, from the high school, down Pine Street to Bayview Avenue, then south to Merrick Road and west to South Brookside Avenue. It will continue back to the school, which will be hosting a health and wellness fair featuring about 40 vendors, Kuncham said.

The day’s events are sponsored by Freeport Cares, a collaboration of the school district, the village and several community organizations.
