Freeport’s trustees balked at Mayor Andrew Hardwick’s seventh call for a forensic audit of village finances on Monday night.

The mayor has repeatedly called for the audit, which he has said would follow up on an earlier audit by state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli that found Freeport racked up debt by including in the budget nearly $5 million of nonexistent funds between 2006 and 2010.

Trustee Carmen Pineyro asked at a July 23 meeting that the village consider narrowing the parameters of the audit and potentially vote on a more targeted request for proposal on Monday.

But the item Hardwick brought up on Monday was no more specific than the previous proposals, Pineyro said.

Pineyro and the other three trustees refused to move the audit forward despite Hardwick’s contention that they could revise the proposal during the meeting.

Hardwick said he will continue to call for the audit at future meetings.
