Freeport police to get domestic violence training

The Freeport Police Department will receive $25,000 to improve domestic violence training for its police officers.
The money will be used “to provide domestic violence training to their officers and develop training curriculum,” said a statement released by Sen. Charles J. Fuschillo Jr. (R-Merrick), who lobbied for the funding.
“Domestic violence affects families all across Long Island. It’s a serious crime which can leave both physical and emotional scars on its victims,” Fuschillo said in the statement.
Amityville police also received $25,000.
The Freeport police department will use the money “to enhance and develop our department’s training to better serve our community and the victims of domestic violence,” said department chief Miguel Bermudez in a statement.
Freeport Mayor Andrew Hardwick added: “Training is an important part of a public servant’s career, and it is imperative that we consistently be at the forefront of any new procedures or domestic violence trends.”
