Fundraiser for neglected pony Friday
Suffolk County SPCA will hold a fundraiser Friday evening to raise money for surgery for a pony that was seized in a raid in late April at Abbess Farm in Calverton.
Buttercup, a Palomino pony, was one of 27 horses and ponies rescued by the Suffolk County SPCA from the farm after reports of neglect there.
One of the horses was locked in a barn without food or water, Suffolk SPCA Chief Ray Gross said. Authorities found Buttercup with a severe eye infection requiring immediate medical attention. Now, veterinarians have determined the eye needs to be removed.
“I don’t ever recall in the 27 years I’ve been involved in the SPCA a seizure of that many horses in one location,” Gross said. He added that all of the animals seized in the raid have either been adopted or are in foster care.
Friday’s fundraiser will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard in Baiting Hollow. Admission is $20, and all proceeds will go toward Buttercup’s surgery (which will cost about $5,000) and the Suffolk SPCA. The evening will include hot food, a raffle and a Chinese auction.
Buttercup, who will be eligible for adoption after his surgery, is expected to be at the event.
