Garden City to vote on exceeding tax levy

The Garden City Village board will hold a public hearing next month to consider exceeding the state’s 2 percent property tax levy cap and another hearing on its tentative 2013-14 budget.

The hearing will take place April 1 at Village Hall.

“It is a safety measure,” Mayor Donald Brudie said at the Thursday board meeting, adding the next village budget work session will be Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Village Hall.

Last year, the board had adopted a $54.6-million budget for 2012-13. The current budget was an increase of 1.67 percent compared to 2011-12.

At the Thursday meeting, the board also approved superstorm Sandy repair contract work to fix sidewalks damaged by trees uprooted at 450 locations. The village hired Valente Contracting Corp. based in Mineola for $66,418. The contract is eligible for FEMA reimbursement, officials said.
