Geno misses preseason opener with sore ankle
Aaron Glenn said Geno Smith was held out the Jets’ preseason game on Friday night for “precautionary” reasons after the quarterback hurt his ankle in the last joint practice against Tampa Bay on Wednesday.
Smith has a sore ankle and is day-to-day, according to Glenn.
“Nothing to be alarmed about,” Glenn said.
The Jets coach decided Thursday not to take any chances with Smith. He told rookie Cade Klubnik he would get the start. It was Klubnik’s first time playing behind the starting offensive line and with some first-team receivers. Klubnik led the Jets on two scoring drives in the two series he played – a field goal and a touchdown – in their 24-16 loss to the Buccaneers.
Glenn was impressed with Klubnik’s performance.
“I went right to Cade (on Thursday) and told him he would be the starter. He was champing at the bit to get a chance to go with the 1s,” Glenn said. “I thought he did a hell of a job, not getting a lot of reps with the 1s. I give him a lot of credit for going out there and operating the way that he did.”
