George Steinbrenner remembered on Twitter, Facebook
The condolences have come in like an unending human wave during a come-from-behind Yankee rally, with thousands of warm sentiments and appreciations filling social media sites like Twitter and Facebook following news that owner George Steinbrenner died Tuesday morning after a heart attack.
Some comments are funny, some are poignant, while others give tips of the hat to Steinbrenner’s feistiness, legendary ego and passion.
On Twitter:
“Typical Steinbrenner to upstage the All Star Game,” said Greg Johnson (@thegregjohnson), a stand-up comic and host of Sirius Satellite’s Cosmo Radio, referring to tonight’s game at Angels Stadium in Anaheim, Calif.
Former New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan (@michaelstrahan) said Steinbrenner set “the standard as an owner for doing whatever you have to do to win with no apologies. Unique man!!!” The Jets' Braylon Edwards (@OfficialBraylon) also remembered on his Twitter account: "RIP to one of the greats of sports as a whole my prayers goes out to the entire Yankees organization & most of all the Steinbrenner family."
And through its official Twitter account, Major League Baseball (@MLB) quoted former Yankees catcher Yogi Berra as saying, “George was The Boss, make no mistake. He built the Yankees into champions and that’s something nobody can ever deny."
Yankee pitcher Joba Chamberlain (@Joba_62) weighed in early Tuesday, saying "We all suffered a huge loss today! Mr. Steinbrenner was a great man, great owner, that did so many amazing things. You will truly be missed!"
ESPN personality Adam Schefter (@Adam_Schefter) tied in the recent passing of longtime Yankee announcer Bob Sheppard in a tweet, "RIP, George Steinbrenner. Bob Sheppard already is there to announce your arrival."
