San Francisco Giants reliever Guillermo Mota was suspended for 100 games Monday, becoming only the third major-league player penalized twice for positive drug tests.

The commissioner's office said the 38-year-old righthander tested positive for Clenbuterol. In November 2006, while with the Mets, Mota was suspended for the first 50 games of the next season.

Mota's agent, Adam Katz, said in a statement that the Clenbuterol was in children's cough medicine.

"Players are responsible for what they put in their bodies. Guillermo understands that," Katz said. "A 100-game suspension for taking a children's cough medicine that contains trace amounts of a prohibited substance, which is what happened here, is severe and unfair and does not reflect the intention of the joint drug prevention and treatment program. We will appeal it."

The Major League Baseball Players Association filed a grievance challenging the suspension that will be heard by an arbitrator. Under baseball's drug agreement, grievances for initial positive tests are heard before a suspension is announced but cases involving second or third positives are argued after the penalty is made public. No player has tested positive a third time, which would result in a lifetime ban.

Hamels suspended

Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels was suspended five games for intentionally throwing at Bryce Harper Sunday. He plunked Harper in the small of the back with a fastball in the first inning and admitted the purpose pitch was his way of welcoming the Nationals' 19-year-old phenom to the big leagues.

Red Sox 11, Royals 5: Will Middlebrooks homered twice and David Ortiz and Dustin Pedroia also went deep for visiting Boston. Middlebrooks is the first player in Red Sox history with at least one extra-base hit in each of his first four major league games.

Angels 8, Twins 3: The Angels' Jered Weaver (5-0) allowed three hits in six innings to beat host Minnesota, the same team he no-hit last week.

Rangers 14, Orioles 3: Josh Hamilton hit his 10th home run of the season in a seven-run ninth for visiting Texas.

Indians sweep White Sox. Shelley Duncan's RBI double in the eighth inning gave host Cleveland a 3-2 win for a day-night doubleheader sweep. The Indians won Game 1, 8-6.

Cubs 5, Braves 1: Jeff Samardzija (4-1) allowed a run in seven innings and Bryan LaHair, Ian Stewart and Geovany Soto homered for host Chicago.

Marlins 4, Astros 0: Carlos Zambrano pitched a three-hitter for his first win and Giancarlo Stanton extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a two-run homer for visiting Miami.

Reds 3, Brewers 1: Jay Bruce hit a three-run homer for visiting Cincinnati. -- AP
