Three days after their win over the Cowboys, the Giants still were shaking their heads at the performance by Jason Pierre-Paul.

"If you take him out of that game, how do we win?" defensive end Dave Tollefson wondered aloud, referencing Pierre-Paul's two sacks -- one for a safety -- forced fumble and blocked field goal that earned him NFC Defensive Player of the Week.

Tom Coughlin touted Pierre-Paul's "big, big motor" and his development. "You're very, very happy to see the advancement and there's a lot more football to be played," he said.

Despite all the accolades, Pierre-Paul said he's not yet reaching his full potential. The Giants drafted him as a raw athlete, and as far as he's concerned he still needs some cooking before he's table-ready.

"I haven't arrived yet," he said. "Still taking baby steps. When I arrive everyone will know."

The Giants could be short-handed at defensive end this week. Osi Umenyiora (ankle) will not play and Justin Tuck (toe) did not practice Wednesday although Coughlin said he should be able to go on Sunday. Tollefson said he's not worried, and he pointed to Pierre-Paul to explain why.

"We got Superman over here," he said. "As long as he keeps coming to save the day, we'll be all right."

Grossman disputes odds

Antrel Rolle said on Tuesday that if the Giants and Redskins played 100 times, the Giants would win 99 of those games. Given that they already won in September, that means the next Redskins victory should come sometime during the 2061 season. Rex Grossman wasn't buying that math.

"It's the NFL and nobody is going to beat anyone 99 out of 100 times," the Redskins quarterback said on a conference call. "I understand that there is a lot of pride in the NFL and a lot of people go about their business with a lot of pride and ego, and we do the same thing."

Giant steps

S Kenny Phillips (knee) returned to practice after missing a week with a sprained MCL . . . WR Mario Manningham (knee) said he felt good after his first game in three weeks and he probably will avoid surgery after the season.
