A group of Hispanic business owners are starting the first Hispanic Chamber of Commerce on the East End. The driving force behind the effort is Benny Torres, owner of Fiesta Auto Insurance in Hampton Bays, a franchise business he began a year ago after serving as an insurance representative for the CSEA union on Long Island.
Torres said he and about 50 other Hispanic business owners on the East End plan to gather in Hampton Bays on Monday to further their plans. He said he has identified at least 150 Hispanic-owned businesses on the North and South forks.
"Hispanic businesses don't have a voice out here," Torres said.
Yolanda Martinez, owner of Yolanda's Beauty Salon in Hampton Bays, is a supporter. "I think it is necessary," she said. "This way we can support our businesses."
