Glen Cove dedicates street to Martin Luther King

Glen Cove officials on Saturday morning are to dedicate a city street to Martin Luther King Jr. in a ceremony honoring the slain civil rights leader.
Bridge Street in downtown Glen Cove is to be called “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way.”
It was chosen in part because the city’s Martin Luther King parade makes its way down that stretch each year, said Mayor Ralph Suozzi.
“Glen Cove was at the forefront of recognizing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and did so even before the federal holiday,” he said.
The holiday was first observed in 1986, and the parade began in 1984.
Suozzi said the street dedication, initiated by the city’s Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Commemorative Commission, is “long overdue.”
The public is invited to attend the ceremony, which will take place at 10 a.m. in front of the police department at 1 Bridge St.
