Glen Cove fires public works supervisor for Sandy overtime

The Glen Cove City Council has fired public works supervisor Kevin Monahan for putting in for overtime pay for superstorm Sandy cleanup work on a day officials said he did not work.

The council Tuesday night voted to follow the recommendation of the city’s appointed hearing officer, Glen Cove Housing Authority executive director Eric Wingate, that Monahan be terminated.

Councilman Tony Jimenez cast the only dissenting vote, saying he thought Monahan should be “severely punished” but not fired.

Monahan had been suspended for 30 days without pay pending the results of four days of hearings in March.

According to city records, Monahan put in for 12 hours of overtime for storm cleanup work in Long Beach on Nov. 25 for a total of $1,175 in pay but city officials said he did not work that day. In the weeks after Sandy struck, Glen Cove sent equipment and employees to Long Beach to assist in cleanup efforts there.

Monahan could not be reached for comment.
