Glen Cove limits smoking in parks

Glen Cove has joined the many Long Island municipalities that have designated at least some of their parks or beaches as smoke-free.
The city, working with the Glen Cove Substance Abuse Free Environment agency and the Tobacco Action Coalition, will no longer allow smoking at Danis Park and at the playgrounds at Dennis Brian Murray Park and Stanco Park. The process, which began last year, was capped Tuesday when the Tobacco Action Coalition’s Nassau coordinator, Carol Meschkow, thanked officials at a City Council meeting.
“It’s a start,” Mayor Ralph Suozzi said. “This is another means of offering residents a healthier and cleaner recreational environment.”
The Tobacco Action Coalition said more than 280 municipalities statewide have established tobacco-free outdoor policies. On Long Island, some municipalities have banned smoking at all parks and beaches and around entryways of government buildings.
