The vacant Coles School building in Glen Cove, named in a city deficit reduction plan last year as a nontaxable property that could potentially be sold to private developers, is to remain under city ownership, Mayor Ralph Suozzi said.
Suozzi at Tuesday’s city council meeting said he envisions several possibilities for the space that include moving the senior center, youth center or library into the school and creating a recreational facility there.
“I’ve come to resolve that it should stay in the hands of the city of Glen Cove in perpetuity,” he said, responding during the meeting’s public comment portion to a question posed by local Republican club leader and former mayoral opponent Paul Meli.
Meli had asked whether the Coles School property is to be sold to bring in revenue to the city.
The Cedar Swamp Road building, a public school from 1929 until 1992, was being rented by private school Solomon Schechter until last July; Schecter is now leasing a building in the Mineola School District.
The Coles School’s gym was rented earlier this year to a private soccer training company.
But the city no longer plans on selling it to create taxable real estate.
The 12,000-square-foot building has green space, about 100 parking spots and other features that would suit a civic center, Suozzi said.
“I don’t see it as a deficit-reduction item anymore,” Suozzi said. “It’s a pawnshop mentality. In good times, we would never let it go.”
