NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Tuesday there was no timetable for completion of the league's investigation into allegations that Vikings quarterback Brett Favre sent explicit text messages and photographs to a former Jets game day hostess when Favre was with the Jets in 2008.

"We're just looking for facts now," Goodell said at an NFL owners' meeting in Chicago. "I'm going to deal with it as we get the facts."

Goodell said he has no immediate plans to meet with Favre, although that could change. "If it is something that would help us get to a conclusion and it is warranted, I will do so," he said.

The league's investigation began late last week after a report on Deadspin.com alleged that Favre sent the messages and photos to Jenn Sterger, who no longer works for the team. Sterger has not commented on the reports, and Deadspin indicated she did not supply the texts and photos to the website.

Favre said last week he was willing to meet with Goodell about the alleged messages. He declined to elaborate on the situation after Monday night's 29-20 loss to the Jets at New Meadowlands Stadium.

"If you want to talk about what happened in the football game tonight, I'd love to," Favre said. Asked if he was embarrassed about the allegations, he said: "I am embarrassed about this football game. I thought we gave a great effort."

Favre also declined to comment on the NFL's investigation.

If Goodell finds that Favre violated the league's personal conduct policy, he may elect to suspend him. Favre has played a record 289 consecutive games.

Goodell said Monday that the league was continuing to gather facts before determining "what the next step is from there, if any."
