Brookhaven Town residents doing spring cleaning can take advantage of free shredding the town will provide next week.

On May 6 and 7, a large mobile shredder will be stationed at the town’s Materials Recycling Facility at 350 Horseblock Rd. in Yaphank.

Small businesses may use the shredder on May 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., but need to register first by calling 631-451-6222.

On May 7, residents may use the shredder from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The shredding services will encourage paper recycling, said Town Supervisor Mark Lesko.

“This event is another chance for residents and small businesses to help the environment,” Lesko said, even as they dispose of a “large volume of documents that may be cluttering up their homes and offices.”

Residents can witness “the secure destruction of sensitive papers,” the town said in a statement.

Papers can remain stapled, but paper clips and other metal as well as rubber bands must be removed.

Hudson-Baylor, the company that maintains the town’s recycling facility, will keep the first 7,000 pounds of shredded paper. The town can bale and sell the remainder.
