Gov. Cuomo’s victory in Democratic primary not as convincing as he hoped

Though Gov. Andrew Cuomo won handily against political novice Zephyr Teachout in Tuesday’s Democratic primary, many did not expect the margin of victory to be as close as it was.

A surprising 34 percent of voters opted for the challenger. Political analyst Jerry Kremer says the results show some members of the party's liberal wing are not thrilled with Cuomo.

“A lot of the people who participated in this revolt against the governor are sort of like the Democratic equivalent of the tea party on the right,” Kremer told News 12.

At the heart of the dissent against Cuomo is the issue of Common Core. Many opponents of the controversial educational standards blamed the governor for what they called a failed rollout. Bellmore mom Jeanette Deutermann founded an anti-Common Core Facebook page. To date, it has more than 17,000 likes. She says most of those people don't "like" the governor.

The problem for the "anybody but Cuomo" crowd is that it may split as a voting bloc come Election Day. Even Deutermann acknowledges that while some voters will choose Republican Rob Astorino, others will vote for a third-party candidate, or just stay home. That division could hand the governor a second term.
