Joseph Kelly and Francis “Bud” Cosgrove met 40 years ago while competing in a 10k run in Rockville Centre, went out for a beer afterward and became instant friends. 
They’ll be back together Saturday on the streets of Rockville Centre as grand marshals for the village’s 15th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. 
“Being named grand marshal is wonderful,” the 72-year-old Cosgrove said. “And I am proud to walk alongside Joe. He is the salt of the earth.” 
Kelly and Cosgrove got to work after resident and fellow co-founder David Crowe asked at a local gathering why Rockville Centre didn’t have a St. Patrick’s Day celebration. The conversation led to the founding of the Rockville Centre St. Patrick's Committee.

“Rockville Centre has a large Irish community, so it was the perfect place,” Cosgrove said. “Bishop John McGann discussed it with us, and we decided that we wouldn’t compete with Garden City and it must be on the Saturday after St. Patrick’s Day.” 
Their diligence had led not just to community spirit, but more than $622,000 in donations over the last 14 years for 42 charities. 
“I have learned a lot about charities being a part of the committee,” said Kelly, 68. “To be able to give a check and see someone so touched and grateful that they are brought to tears is a very emotional experience.” 
Saturday will be memorable for Kelly, but perhaps not quite as emotional as his recollections of the parade’s second year. 
“Steven McDonald [a Malverne resident and New York City Police Department detective who was left a quadriplegic after being shot in 1986] and New York City Fire Department Chaplain Mychal Judge [who died on 9/11] were the grand marshals,” said Kelly, who retired as an executive at Prudential Securities. “Their participation in the parade with a 38 degree temperature and rain is something I will always remember. Those two going down Maple Avenue stays with me.” 
Village of Rockville Centre Mayor Mary W. Bossart feels Kelly and Cosgrove are excellent choices for grand marshals based on their dedication. 
“Joe Kelly and Bud Cosgrove are excellent choices as co-honorees because, as founders of the parade, they led others in establishing a tradition that adds to the quality of community life in our village. Joe and Bud started the parade because of what it would mean to our residents – not for honors for themselves. They are both hardworking, charitable, family men who are great examples of the kind of residents living in Rockville Centre.” 
The pair will wear tuxedos with tails, green bow ties and top hats. Kelly will go the parade with his wife, Dianne, his children Chris, Tara and Jill, and grandchildren. Cosgrove will be escorted by his wife, Suzie, his children Amy, Cindy, Katie, Michael, Danny and Brian and grandchildren. 
The parade is the perfect opportunity to connect with the community, friends and family, said Cosgrove, a retired deputy commissioner of the Nassau County Parks and Recreation Department. 
“To see children and family members come together and a sea of American and Irish flags is amazing,” he said.

Rockville Centre duo heads St. Pat’s parade

Sunday’s Glen Cove St. Patrick’s Day parade will be led by a local who has seen Irish pride firsthand. 
In November, the city’s St. Patrick’s Day parade committee unanimously voted Ireland native Andrew Stafford as grand marshal of the city’s 23rd annual parade, which begins at 1 p.m. 
Stafford, 48, served as president, vice president and marshal of Division 8 (also known as the Mike Moran Division) of the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Glen Cove. He also spent the last decade spearheading the city’s St. Patrick’s Day parade behind the scenes. Now he’s at the forefront. 
“It’s a nice honor after all these years, especially since I’m born Irish and [that’s] where I came from,” he said. 
Born in County Wexford, Ireland, Stafford first came to America when he was 25. He and his girlfriend (now-wife) Pauline moved to Locust Valley in 1988 due to their country’s looming recession. They stayed on Long Island for two years before moving to East Landsdown, Pa., where they had their first child, daughter Aisling. They returned to Locust Valley one year later. In 1996 they moved back to Ireland and had their second child, daughter Caoimhe, but returned to Locust Valley one year later. 
Although he’s been in and out of Long Island, Stafford, a landscaper by trade, has still managed to make his mark with residents. Joe McDonald, Division 8 president, said Stafford’s the main reason he holds the position today. 
“He’s part of the reason I chose Division 8,” the Massapequa native said. “He’s very smart, organized, you can’t find a better person.” 
Stafford gave McDonald a heads-up at last year’s parade that he was retiring from organizing the event. 
“I told him he was going to be the grand marshal this year,” McDonald said, laughing. “Either that, or you’re running it again, I told him.” 
In his role as the parade chairman, the Stafford family’s phone would ring nonstop this time of year. With him as the grand marshal the phone isn’t much quieter. 
Said Pauline Stafford, “I call myself the parade widow.”

Joan Lycke is as Irish as they come. 
“I’m a very Irish person,” the Montauk woman said. “I come from 100 percent Irish roots.” 
And on Sunday, Lycke, 73, will be the grand marshal of the 49th annual Montauk St. Patrick’s Day Parade. 
Lycke, whose grandparents hailed from County Galway and County Kerry, was born in the South Bronx and moved with her family to Montauk in 1953 – a community she has served selflessly for decades, residents say. 
“Joan Lycke is part of Montauk,” said Joe Bloecker, president of the Montauk Friends of Erin, the organization that sponsors the parade. “She’s lived here almost her entire life and for the entire time, she’s done nothing but help people. She is the essence of good in Montauk.” 
Through Lycke’s dedication and vision, the Montauk Playhouse Community Center Foundation was born. The community center today houses a senior center, day care facility and health services. 
The Playhouse was built in the 1920s by Carl Fisher, said John Behan, who runs the annual grand marshal’s luncheon. 
“It’s a giant of a building that was completely demolished,” he said. “Joan led the charge, raising millions of dollars. It wouldn’t have been possible without Joan. She stands out and is willing to give unselfishly of her time and effort to make our community a better place.” 
Lycke, who graduated from East Hampton High School, is a longtime trustee of the Montauk Library. She was involved with Scouts when her two children were young. Lycke, who has four grandchildren, said three generations of her family have thrived in Montauk. 
“It’s a place that I absolutely love,” she said. “It is a paradise. When we moved here it was five kids and a dog from the South Bronx. It was a dream come true.” 
Her parents wanted a safe place for their children to grow up. Lycke’s father started a plumbing business in Montauk. 
“I never thought about what a chance they took, and how brave they were,” she said. “My mother never drove.” 
Although winters are hard, with business slow, Lycke, who owns&nbsp;the Montauk&nbsp;Laundromat, cherishes Montauk. 
“My mother taught us to be grateful and give back when you are fortunate enough to be blessed as we have, and been given the incredible gift of being able to live here.” 
Ireland is never far from Lycke’s heart. She visits often and hires college students from Ireland during the summer. 
“They’ve all become family,” Lycke said. 
She was thrilled to be chosen as grand marshal. 
“It’s very exciting for me,” she said. “I’m honored beyond belief to be given this wonderful tribute,” she said. 
To celebrate her honor, members of Lycke’s large Irish family are heading to Montauk from Atlanta, Washington, DC, Boston and upstate. 
Lycke will also march in New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day parade. 
“I can’t believe I’m 73,” Lycke said. “I’m a groovy woman – my Irish roots have served me well. I’m very grateful.”

Tony Galgano and Michael “Mickey” Shields are known for their quiet acts of kindness and their popular Hamptons watering hole. 
And on Saturday, the owners of the Boardy Barn will be the grand marshals of the seventh annual Hampton Bays St. Patrick’s Day Parade. 
“They don’t want a light on them,” said former Southampton Town Supervisor Patrick Heaney, vice president of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Michael Collins Division 11, which sponsors the parade. “Both Mickey and Tony have demonstrated over decades their commitment to helping people in need and raising funds for causes in the Town of Southampton. This is really just a humble way of saying thank you to them.” 
For years, Galgano and Shields have offered the use of their bar, the Boardy Barn, to help raise money for individuals facing catastrophic illness or other hardships. 
Parade chairman John Ryan said Galgano and Shields are “humble people. Since day one, from the very start of the parade they’ve been on the top of the list to be grand marshals. Most of the time, they’ve shied away from the honor, thinking other people deserve it more than themselves.” 
Shields and Galgano teamed up in 1974, both in business and in their quest to serve others. 
"They’re very well respected men in the community,” said George Brogan, chairman of the parade journal. “Their personalities are really, really great. They'll do anything for you." 
Choosing them to be grand marshals, Heaney said, “was a really easy decision.” 
Galgano was raised in Freeport and attended Bishop Loughlin High School and Hofstra University. After three years in the Army, Galgano opened the Boardy Barn. Galgano is a member of the Hampton Bays Chamber of Commerce, the Hampton Bays Booster Club and an honorary member the Hampton Bays Fire Department. He and his wife Wendy will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary this year and have two children and five grandchildren. 
Shields is a Brooklyn native and attended Brooklyn Prep. He moved to Los Angeles – leaving his beloved Dodgers behind – and worked as a bartender before serving in the U.S. Air Force in the 1960s in Alaska. He and his wife Maryann have two children, Michael and Brian. 
Dennis O’Rourke, who helps organize the parade’s lineup and run the event, said Galgano and Shields have made contributions to local organizations, including the fire department and the volunteer ambulance corp. 
“They do little things – random acts of kindness,” O’Rourke said. “There have been several occasions where Tony would pay for someone’s lunch and ask that they not be told that he paid. If you have a cause or want to raise money for someone who is sick or hurt, they’ll let you have the Boardy Barn without question.” 
The parade kicks off 11 a.m. Saturday at Hampton Bays Middle School on Ponquogue Avenue.

After more than three decades in the New York State Senate, you’d think Caesar Trunzo has had enough of raucous, slow-moving processions. 
But on Sunday, the 84-year-old Brentwood resident will lead the way as the grand marshal of Ronkonkoma’s 21st St. Patrick’s Day Parade. 
“We try to pick someone well-known to the community,” said Jim Tallman, a member of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade planning committee at the St. Regis Council Knights of Columbus -- and last year’s grand marshal. 
Trunzo was a Republican state senator from 1973 until 2008, when he lost to Brian X. Foley for the Third District position. 
Tallman said he, like Trunzo, was chosen for grand marshal because of his work in the area. 
The Ronkonkoma Knights of Columbus grand knight, Gerry McMenamin, talked about how Trunzo was instrumental in securing a $25,000 grant to install an elevator in the organization’s building. The project was intended to make the building handicapped-accessible.

Trunzo leads Ronkonkoma St. Pat’s parade

For the past 14 years, Richard Nelson has been responsible for outfitting every grand marshal for the Huntington St. Patrick’s Day Parade. 
On Sunday, the owner of Tuxedo Park in Carle Place will don his own black tux and ascot as the 77th grand marshal of the annual parade. 
“I was surprised,” said Nelson, 42, of learning he had been named grand marshal. “I thought I had to be a lot older.” 
Dominick Feeney, president of the Huntington Ancient Order of Hibernians, which runs the parade, said Nelson was chosen because of his dedication to the Hibernians, for the great service he has provided the parade, and as an example of a successful and community-minded businessman. 
Every year, the AOH sells advertisements for a parade edition of the local magazine Village Connection to raise money for charity. Feeney said the grand marshal plays a big role in helping to sell ads. 
“Our main goal is to raise money for charity,” he said. “So we pick someone that is successful and that can help us.” 
Last year, the group donated $12,000 to the food pantry at the Church of St. Patrick in Huntington, as well as thousands of dollars to other local charities, he said. 
Nelson, who lives in Smithtown with his wife, Colleen, and sons, Ricky, 17, and Ryan, 12, knows a thing or two about getting the job done. Nelson started working part-time at the original Tuxedo Park location in Patchogue, where he grew up, when he was in high school. 
A few years after he started, the then-owner gave him the option of buying into the company. A few years after that, when Nelson was 19, he took over the business and has owned it ever since. 
The store recently celebrated its 25th year in business, surviving cycles in the economy and two moves, including a store closure in 2006 in Huntington. 
“He’s probably the hardest-working person I’ve ever met,” said Frank Norberto of Patchogue, Nelson’s friend since childhood. 
Norberto said he wasn’t surprised when Nelson went into the formal-wear business because he has always taken a lot of care with his appearance. He said even in high school, Nelson kept up with the latest trends. 
“He always had the jewelry, was always dressed up, he had the latest fashions,” he said. “But yet, if there’s work to be done and he needs to get his hands dirty, he’s not afraid to do that either. That’s the great thing about Ricky.” 
Colleen Nelson, 43, who met her husband in elementary school, said he is a family man. Both of their children play baseball, and he enjoys watching their games. She said her husband is also very generous and willing to help anyone in need. 
Two years ago, she said, when a man who worked for Nelson died of cancer, Nelson put together a huge fundraiser at Westbury Manor to raise money for his family. 
“Anyone who needs help,” she said. “He’ll drop anything and go out of his way for them.” 
The Huntington St. Patrick’s Day Parade steps off at 2 p.m. Sunday just north of the train station and runs along New York Avenue and Main Street.

Smithtown Town Supervisor Patrick Vecchio is praying for sunny skies Saturday, when he’ll serve as grand marshal in the 27th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in St. James. 
Growing up in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, Vecchio went to school at St. Michael Elementary School and played with the St. St. Athanasius Parish’s fife and drum corp. 
"I marched in many St. Patrick’s Day parades where it snowed and rained -- the fife holes were filled with water and snow,” Vecchio remembered. “It was pretty tough trying to play the fife. The music was getting wet and the capes we wore would be flying in the wind." 
Vecchio, 81, has been Smithtown's town supervisor for 34 years – the longest stint of any supervisor in New York State. 
Helene Krantz, a board member of the St. James Chamber of Commerce, said Vecchio’s nomination is long overdue. 
"The man is an incredible icon,” she said. “He’s done for the community in every way possible. He’s an impeccable politician, with so much integrity. He is an amazing person." 
Before his career as an elected official, Vecchio had a 20-year stint with the New York Police Department. Back then he also celebrated St. Patrick’s Day, marching in parades when John Lindsay was the city’s mayor. 
"My name is Patrick, but I’m not Irish," Vecchio said, adding that he nevertheless has long ties to the Irish community. The best man at his wedding was Irish, he picked up a bevy of Irish buddies during his Irish Catholic school days, and he enjoyed a trip to Ireland last year. 
The parade, Krantz said, gives the public the chance to honor a legend. 
"It affords us the grand opportunity to say thank you to this man, who is a pillar of the community," she said.

For years, Ed “Mickey” Reilly has been at the end of the Bayport-Blue Point Chamber of Commerce Parade. 
“I’ve been involved with organizing the parade for 21 years but I’m always the one at the end, keeping it moving,” Reilly said. 
But this year, Reilly and his wife, Gail, will step straight to the front of the line, kicking off the 21st annual Bayport-Blue Point Chamber of Commerce St. Patrick’s Day Parade as grand marshals of the event. 
Married for 53 years, the lovebirds, who first met at Our Lady of Grace Elementary School in Howard Beach, started dating while students at John Adams High School in Adams Park. 
They’re united in their love for their family, their faith and to serving the community they call home. 
“Gail and Mickey are just about as close to God as two people can come,” said Lenore Ringer Prezio, secretary of the Bayport-Blue Point Chamber of Commerce. 
“They are the nicest people you would ever meet in your life. And their sense of giving has extended to their children and grandchildren. Everybody should aspire to be like these two – the world would be a better place.” 
Gail, 72, and Mickey, 74, have two children, Kathleen and Raymond, and six grandchildren – their youngest, Kerry Berman, is an Irish step dancer. 
Their legacy of volunteerism includes a long list of organizations and charities such as the Blue Point Fire Department and the St. Ursula Retreat Center in Blue Point, as well as the Chamber of Commerce. 
Even with busy careers, Gail, who worked as a court clerk, and Mickey, who retired from the Suffolk County Water Authority and now has his own business, All Suffolk Backflow Inc., always made time for others. 
When they lost their son Michael, who was home on leave from the Coast Guard, in a tragic accident in 1980, the Reillys found solace in public service. 
“We took on a lot of extra jobs to keep us busy,” Mickey said. 
Helping others has become their hallmark, both at home and in David Park on Fire Island, where they spend summers. 
“I hope the grandchildren will continue the tradition,” Mickey said. 
Irish blood in their veins, the Reillys enjoyed a trip to Ireland, where they toured the Ring of Kerry. Growing up in Howard Beach, “90 percent of the nuns were Irish,” Gail said. “There was a lot of background in Irish history, in songs and dances.” 
But despite their love of the green, they never expected a nomination to serve as grand marshals of the St. Patrick’s Day parade. 
“Gail and I could never have imagined a honor like this in our lives. This community is like a big family and we are so proud of that,” Mickey said. 
The pair were driving in Florida when they got the news. 
“We couldn’t believe it,” he added. “They tell me when once you get to Main Street, on Montauk Highway, as grand marshal, you won’t believe the feeling.” 
Chris Cavanaugh, director and founder of the parade, said the chamber is thrilled to honor the beloved couple. 
“For years, they’ve helped wherever they can in the community,” Cavanaugh said. “They’re great people.”

Blue Point couple leads St. Pat’s parade

If a parade’s grand marshal is supposed to exemplify the community, then the people of Miller Place and Rocky Point have a lot to live up to. 
Cornelius Maguire, who will lead Sunday’s St. Patrick's Day parade, is a hard worker, a self starter, a go getter and a resilient spirit, according to his family and friends,&nbsp;who call him Neil. 
“Neil would do anything for anyone,” said longtime friend and neighbor Frank Faivre. “He just does the kinds of things you wouldn’t expect anyone to do. He’ll blow the leaves off his driveway, and then he’ll do the whole neighborhood before anyone even wakes up.” 
John Barchi, president of the Friends of St. Patrick’s parade committee, said Maguire’s willingness to take on any task and his work ethic are just two of the qualities that made the committee proud to choose him to lead the parade. 
For the past 10 years, Maguire has led the queen committee and served as parade master of ceremonies. “He really puts in a lot of work,” Barchi said. “He is very conscientious about maintaining the traditions of the parade.” 
Maguire, 57, grew up in Queens with seven brothers and one sister. In 1969, his father got a job on Long Island and moved the family to Port Jefferson. Maguire attended his first Rocky Point-Miller Place St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 1970 and, except for a four-year stint working on an oil rig in Louisiana, he hasn’t missed one since. 
That record includes the 2008 parade, when Maguire was battling testicular cancer. 
Maguire’s wife, Eileen, said she remembers it was a cold, windy day and her husband wasn’t feeling well. He was having a bad reaction to his chemotherapy treatments, she said, but he insisted on staying for the entire parade. 
“Everyone kept saying, ‘You don’t look good, Neil,’ and he didn’t look good at all,” she said. “He was hospitalized for 13 days after that, but he had a positive attitude throughout the whole day.” 
Maguire, who’s been cancer free for a year and a half, has never been one to succumb to obstacles. And he’s a man who always pushing himself to do more. 
When he returned home from Louisiana, Maguire wanted to put his newly learned carpentry skills to use. He thought it would be nice to own his own house, so he purchased an acre of land in Miller Place and built one. 
Then he convinced his friends to do the same thing. 
“We purchased the property together, put in this road and built all the houses,” Faivre said. 
In 1992, Maguire was working as a tool and die maker when he became restless. One day, he was at the store buying milk and said to himself, “I wish I could get milk delivery.” So he did his research, founded the Bedrock Creamery and became a milkman. 
Maguire said he starts his route at midnight and finishes about 7 a.m. He serves the area between Smithtown and Miller Place and says he has about 300 loyal customers. Maguire appreciates the solitude of working overnight and the stress-free environment. 
“I really like what I do,” he said. “You have to like what you do for a living, that’s really important.” 
Maguire said he is excited and honored to be the grand marshal of this year’s parade that begins at 1 p.m. Sunday. But he said, as usual, his favorite part of the parade will be when it’s over. 
“It’s always amazing to me that we start working on this in October,” he said. “And then to see it all come together and work out, that’s great.”

Miller Place milkman to lead St. Pat’s parade

Brian Crouse has spent a lifetime feeding people. 
Over the past 21 years, Crouse served up thousands of meals and sandwiches at&nbsp;the Sunset Court Deli – affectionately dubbed “the German Deli” by locals – until he sold the business a few months ago. 
But feeding the hungry hasn’t been just a career for the 48-year-old. Providing food for the less fortunate has long been his life’s mission, he said. Crouse has donated food and time to agencies such as the Riverhead soup kitchen and Maureen’s Haven Homeless Outreach Program. 
“If you have food and people are hungry, it just makes sense to feed them,” Crouse said. 
After Hurricane Katrina, Crouse went to New Orleans to feed volunteers. 
“It was a humbling experience,” he said. 
Another humbling experience for Crouse was being named the grand marshal of the 44th Annual Westhampton Beach St. Patrick’s Day Parade. 
“It came as a real surprise that they made me grand marshal. It’s my first parade and I’m getting to walk down the middle of Main Street,” he said. “The community has always supported me and they continue to support me in this. I just hope I continue to live up to their expectations.” 
The parade kicks off at noon Saturday at the intersection of Mill Road and Oneck Lane in Westhampton Beach. 
Lynn Jones, last year’s grand marshal, said Crouse is “a really good choice” to lead this year’s festivities. 
“He’s always extremely generous with contributions for anything to do with the school and the kids,” Jones said. “They all loved his German deli iced tea. It’s become a tradition no one can do without.” 
She said Crouse is an all-around nice guy who’s very humble. 
Kathy Tureski, president of the Westhampton Beach Theater Booster Club, said Crouse always donated cups and iced tea to help raise funds for events. 
“He has always been very supportive of the arts – and all the kids,” Tureski said. “He’s always been willing to lend a hand to anyone who needed help.” 
Westhampton Beach Village Trustee Hank Tucker agreed. 
“He ran a great business in our community. And he was very generous in donating to meet the needs of various organizations,” Tucker said. “He’s a genuinely nice guy who deserves to be the grand marshal.” 
Born in Happauge,&nbsp;Crouse graduated from Stony Brook University and later moved to Westhampton and raised his two sons, Rory and Kevin. He was working in the deli when an opportunity came up to purchase the business. 
“I borrowed money from everyone I knew,” said Crouse, who currently lives in East Quogue with his partner, Janet Cirrone. 
But he always dreamed of following his original career path. And after selling the store, he began studying oriental medicine at the New York College of Health Professions in Syosset, with the goal of attending the University of Bridgeport’s naturopathic medicine program. 
But no matter where life takes him, Crouse said he will always find time to nurture hungry souls. 
“When anything comes up, I’m involved with food – whether it be the rotary spaghetti dinner or the soup kitchen,” Crouse said. “It’s just what I’ve done forever.”
