Grant helps equip firefighters
A federal grant of $64,000 will help the Alert Engine, Hook, Ladder and Hose Co. in Great Neck buy 12 sets of bunker gear for new members, said Alert chairman Michael Green. Those sets include pants, boots, a turnout coat, helmet, gloves and hoods.
The grant, to be spread over three years, will also be used to improve the department’s website and to develop a recruitment program.
“Things like this really make a big difference,” Green said. “It helps morale, it helps everything.”
Alert provides fire and rescue service to the villages of Kings Point and Saddle Rock, as well as Harbor Hills and a small portion of the Town of North Hempstead. Its operating budget is $2.1 million.
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand helped secure the funding through the Department of Homeland Security’s Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response program.
