Great Neck OKs $17M to fix up schools

Voters in the Great Neck school district have approved a capital projects proposition of more that $17 million, by a margin of 912-148.
The funding -- intended for repairs and renovations to schools throughout the district -- will come from the town’s “unassigned” fund balance, according to an announcement on the district's website.
Great Neck School Board president Barbara Berkowitz said the projects are crucial to keeping the district’s schools in good shape. “These are all items that were necessary to repair our aging infrastructure,” she said.
Berkowitz said careful budgeting over the last four to five years allow the district to reserve the funds, and that the projects would have no impact on taxpayers.
A December 2011 proposal chart from the district showed the $17,184,085 would go toward such projects as cosmetic repairs to school interiors and exteriors and updates to school gyms and tracks. Lakeville School will receive $1.35 million to replace the school’s slate roof.
Voting took place Feb. 14.
