Green Shakespeare to be performed
A traveling theater group is heading to Shelter Island to give what it calls an “eco-friendly” performance of Shakespeare’s “As You Like It.”
The group, the Green Theater Collective, will perform at 5 p.m. on July 16 and 17 at the Windmill Field, which gets its name from the Sylvester Manor windmill on Manwaring Road, along with an afternoon theater workshop for children at 2 p.m. July 17.
The theater group, based in Brooklyn, takes pride in using minimal sets, costumes and props, and boasts that its costumes are made of recycled or natural materials with a low carbon footprint. The play — which has 20 characters plus assorted lords and ladies, pages and musicians — will be performed by only seven actors.
The setting is appropriate, since the play is set in a field in a forest.
At the performances, crudite baskets made at the Sylvester Manor educational farm will be available for purchase, in keeping with the not-for-profit farm’s mission to promote organic farming.
The only other kind of green for the shows is the admission — $10 for adults and $5 for children. Audience members are advised to bring blankets and chairs for seating.
