Greenlawn school budget would cut jobs

The Harborfields school board voted at its meeting Wednesday night to approve a final 2012-13 budget proposal of $75.1 million.

Under the proposal, which goes before voters on May 15, the tax levy would increase by 2.86 percent, an amount allowable under exemptions that are part of the state’s 2 percent tax levy cap. A district home assessed at $4,000 would pay an estimated additional $252.12 a year in taxes.

The proposed budget calls for a reduction of 7.9 teaching positions across the elementary, middle and high school levels, the loss of one administrator position, and reductions in maintenance, overtime, transportation and supplies.

State aid of $396,000 in addition to money from retirements and a $55,000 grant from Sen. Carl Marcellino (R-Syosset) allowed the district to revise earlier plans to cut additional teaching positions.

A hearing on the finalized budget will be held on May 8 at Oldfield Middle School.
