Greenway entering its second phase

The next stage of a nearly 4-mile long greenway linking Port Jefferson Station to the Three Villages will begin with a Saturday groundbreaking.

Phase Two of the Setauket to Port Jefferson Station Greenway Trail will kick off from 11 a.m. to noon at the state Department of Transportation parking lot at the corner of Route 112 and Hallock Avenue in Port Jefferson.

When the second section is completed, the trail will stretch from Limroy Lane in Setauket to the DOT parking lot in Port Jefferson Station.

Rep. Tim Bishop (D-Southampton), Sen. Kenneth LaValle (R-Port Jefferson), Assemb. Steve Engelbright (D-Setauket), Legis. Kara Hahn (D-Setauket), Brookhaven Town Supervisor Mark Lesko and Town Councilman Steve Fiore-Rosenfeld are scheduled to attend the groundbreaking, along with civic and school groups, scouts, and members of the Friends of the Greenway.

About 1 1 / 2 miles of the paved 13-foot-wide trail were built in 2008. The first section of the trail begins at the Long Island Rail Road overpass on Gnarled Hollow Road in East Setauket and ends in county parkland east of Possum Lane.
