Greenwood Lake to pay more for HS pact

By MEGHAN MURPHY. Tuxedo's George F. Baker High School got a lifeline Wednesday when the Greenwood Lake school board voted to send a contract with the district to voters.. Every five years, Greenwood Lake officials must renegotiate a tuition contract to send high school students out of district. For three decades, students have attended Tuxedo's Baker high, where Greenwood Lakers make up about 80 percent of the student population of nearly 400.. Two other school districts -- Warwick Valley and Chester -- both put in bids to host the students in 2013-14 during the contract talks. If the Greenwood Lake board chose another district, there were questions about how it could maintain a school with only about 80 students.. Although it will cost at least $3,000 more per student, the board chose to put a contract with Tuxedo to a public vote. Tuxedo negotiated a lower tuition: Next school year, it will receive about $13,900 per student, and the next contract would begin at $12,500. But Chester offered a $9,500 tuition while Warwick came in at $8,000.. Tuxedo is seeking an override of the tax levy cap May 15, but the move isn't related to Greenwood Lake tuition, which changes in 2013, Tuxedo Superintendent Carol Lomascolo said. Tuxedo's teachers, building administrators and central office administrators agreed to a salary freeze in the first year of the contract to help lower the tuition.. Students also formed an advocacy group called Campaign to Remain to urge the board to stay at Tuxedo..
