Group pitches Southampton shellfish project

Southampton trustees met Monday with representatives of ProjectSERV, a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring shellfish and other aquatic life to local waterways, about a pilot project that would plant millions of scallops in the area.

Cold Spring Pond would be the best location for the first seeding, the trustees told projectSERV representatives. The group would buy about 5 million seedlings, which would grow to the larvae stage at a Town of Islip hatchery before being transported to the pond.

At the board of trustees meeting, ProjectSERV officials asked for $5,000 for the “Saturation Spawning” program. Trustees said they want more information before making a commitment.
