Group’s event to put focus on black youth

The Huntington section of the National Council of Negro Women will host a program on Feb. 26 titled “Preparing Our Youth for the 21st Century,” in celebration of Black History Month.

The guest speaker will be Risco D. Mention-Lewis, an attorney who is chief of the youth development and redirection unit with the Nassau County district attorney’s office.

“We’re hoping to spread the message to both kids and parents how important it is to be prepared in this century as far as education and jobs and beyond,” council member Betty Miller said. “We thought it was appropriate as we acknowledge and celebrate our history.”

The National Council of Negro Women is a nonprofit organization with a mission to lead, develop and advocate for women of African descent as they support their families and communities.

The event is at 4 p.m. at St. Lawrence of Canterbury Episcopal Church, 655 Old Country Rd. in Dix Hills.
