Her wallet said go, but her heart said no, and so Anne Shybunko-Moore has decided the Hauppauge-based defense company she and her father run, GSE Dynamics Inc., will remain on Long Island.
She said in a Newsday interview last month that she was looking at South Carolina to see what it could offer. Such a move would have created shock waves in Long Island's business community since several other companies have left the region.
Shybunko-Moore, 41, GSE president, said she had to know what other states would offer the company to relocate, given Long Island's high costs. Loyal as she is to the Island -- she heads a manufacturing committee set up by Rep. Steve Israel (D-Dix Hills) to encourage companies to stay here -- Shybunko-Moore said it was good business to know what's out there.
"When I look at the numbers and put the emotional stuff aside, the numbers tell me to leave," Shybunko-Moore said Tuesday. "But then the person and the human being come out. I still have incredible employees here. The level of skill is here."
"Some people would look at me like I'm crazy, valuing employees more than the bottom line," Shybunko-Moore said. "But, yes, I do."
GSE has about 50 employees and makes parts for submarines and military aircraft. Shybunko-Moore said she will be buying another building, in Hauppauge, to expand the composite manufacturing part of her business.
Her father, Daniel Shybunko, 78, who started the business, had said the decision on whether to move would be up to Shybunko-Moore.
