Half Hollow Hills sets school record in 200 freestyle relay, qualifies for states
Dylan Chan, James Gordin, Justin Chang and Alex Park qualified for the state tournament and set a school record with a time of 1:28.64 in the 200-freestyle relay as Half Hollow Hills defeated Smithtown, 102-81, yesterday in Suffolk League I boys swimming.
The team broke the record of 1:29.08, which was set in 1998, according to Half Hollow Hills coach Jason Weidersum.
Chan also qualified for the state tournament in the 200 IM (1:59.66).
Half Hollow Hills (2-0) divers John Natalone, Alex Cohen and Matt Gacek qualified for the county championship tournament.
Hauppauge 101, Central Islip 76: Troy Maida won the 200 freestyle (1:57.19), Alex Fisher won the 200 IM (2:12.37), and Trenton Burr won the 100 butterfly (1:01.19) to lead Hauppauge (2-0) in League II. Central Islip's Eric McGhee set a school record with a score of 277.72, breaking John Beretzki's record of 211.47 set in 1980, according to Hauppauge coach Rich Lionetti.Jericho 53, Hewlett 48: Dylan Hsieh, Bill Crugnola, Jackson Sugarman and Chris Chen won the 400 freestyle (3:37.77) to clinch the meet for Jericho (4-0) in Conference II.
Garden City 93, Wantagh 92: John Protano won the 1-meter dive with a score of 155.78 to lead Garden City (6-0) in Conference I. The Trojans' 4x100 relay 'A' team (3:32) and 'B' team (3:43.89) each took second to clinch the meet. John Gaffney took first in the 200-yard IM (2:02.5) and the 500 freestyle (4:52.39).
Farmingdale 103, Great Neck South 78: Jimmy Barnola won the 200 freestyle (1:47.41) and the 100 backstroke (:55.28) to lead Farmingdale (3-2) in Conference I. Barnola qualified for the state tournament in the 200 freestyle.
WRESTLINGLindenhurst 42, Sachem North 35: Chris LaRusso decisioned Brian Barry, 8-2, at 126 to lead Lindenhurst in League I.
Plainedge 58, South Side 12: Frank Soto decisioned Jason Dantona, 8-6, at 285 pounds in Conference A-III to propel Plainedge (1-1).
BOYS BOWLINGNorth Babylon 2, Bay Shore 1: Dominick Casale bowled a 237 in Game 1 of a 659 series in the 962-953, 1034-1064, 942-902 League I win. Anthony Cioffi rolled a 231 in Game 2 of a 624 series, and David Maysonet bowled a 233 in Game 2 of a 604 series for North Babylon (7-2). Longwood 2, Riverhead 1: Mitchell Pincus bowled a 228 in Game 2 of a 651 series in the 1,023-917, 1,014-947, 961-998 League IV win. Steven Piazza rolled a 234 in Game 3 of a 645 series for Longwood (7-2).
GYMNASTICSCold Spring Harbor 131.4, Port Washington 128.85: Emily Samuels won the beam with a 7.9 for Cold Spring Harbor (3-2) in Conference II.
Wantagh 156.4, Great Neck South 133.05: Seventh-grader Grace Conway won the all-around (32.5), and Gina Ciappina won the floor exercise (9.0) to lead Wantagh (5-0) in Conference II. Julie Giardina took second in the all-around (32.45) and Lauren O'Mara took third in the all-around (30.55) for Wantagh.
GIRLS FENCINGHalf Hollow Hills 18, Centereach 9: Crystal Chen, Jessica Soohoo, and Anja Kenagy all went 2-0 in sabre for Half Hollow Hills (4-2) in League I. Tiffany Kim and Joely Zilkha each went 2-0 in foil, and Sarah Im went 2-0 in epee for the Colts.
