A 500-foot area near Montauk Highway and Ponquogue Avenue in Hampton Bays was evacuated and traffic was rerouted for about an hour Thursday afternoon after a gas line was struck by a construction crew.

There were no injuries.

According to a news release from the office of Southampton Supervisor Jay Schneiderman, the gas line, located at the corner of Montauk Highway and Ponquogue Avenue, was hit about 1 p.m.

Southampton Police Chief Robert Pearce said the area has markings for gas lines because that stretch of Montauk Highway is being prepared for reconstruction, and that the line was accidentally hit.
