Hanging five with top Beach Boys tunes
Good vibrations -- surely they will be in the air when the Beach Boys rock Nikon Jones Beach Sunday, a concert tour in honor of the band's 50th anniversary.
Even if you can't get to the show, here other five other ways to indulge yourself in Beach Boys nostalgia this summer. Consider it your own Long Island surfin' safari.
1HANG TEN IN MONTAUK
Before or after catching a wave, beach boys and girls often head for the retro-chic Surf Lodge in Montauk (631-668-1562, thesurflodge .com), a motel-restaurant-bar that opened under new ownership this year. Here, the parking lot can look like a sea of surfboard-topped roof racks.
Wave-riders juice up on the fresh fruits and vegetable potions brought in from Sag Harbor's Juicy Naam and served all day from Mason jars at a stand outside the bar. One popular post-surfing pick-me-up: a lobster roll from the new Byron at the Surf Lodge restaurant.
As afternoon mellows into evening, tanned bodies in swimsuits and flip-flops take to lounge chairs out back, soaking up the remainder of the sun's rays. Later, a music scene with roots traceable to the Beach Boys kicks in. If that's not surfy enough, Tuesday and Sunday nights, in the fire pit area overlooking Lake Montauk, classic surfer movies are projected onto a giant screen. "There are blankets for everyone," says managing owner Jayma Cardoso. "It's very chill."
2WATCH THE SURFER GIRLS (AND GUYS)
The surf's almost always up somewhere in Long Beach, which hosted a mega international surfing competition last year. The locals can often be seen catching serious waves. Onlookers should head to the beaches between Lincoln and Monroe boulevards and Maple and Pacific boulevards, which have been designated surfing-only beaches by the city this year.
Early risers or sunset walkers would also do well to head over to the West End (aka the "state" streets), where surfers can ride the waves seven days a week in designated, rotating areas (see the schedule online at longbeachny.org).
Good to know: Gazing from the boardwalk is fine, but if you're on the sand, you're expected to have a day ($12) or season (from $40) beach pass, available at designated entrances.
3GET BEACH BOY STYLE
Guys can grab the vibe with a Hawaiian shirt from the H&M for Water collection, a line of women's, men's and kids' clothing. Even better, 25 percent of sales benefits WaterAid, a nonprofit providing clean water to communities around the globe. Look for the line, $9.95 to $49.95, at select H&M stores.
4FIND SOME OLD VINYL
The Beach Boys' trademark harmonies never sounded better than they do on vinyl -- but classics such as "Wild Honey," "Friends" and "Beach Boys' Party!" can be hard to find. Try your luck at local vinyl stores, particularly High Fidelity Records & CDs in Amityville (631-264-0524, highfidelitycds .com). Owner Marc Sendick will guide you through 200 pieces of new and used originals. He even has sealed copies of the band's double album greatest hits package, "Endless Summer" ($20).
5PARTY ON THE SAND
Surfers have been showing up in bunches to hang at The Sloppy Tuna in Montauk (631-647-8000, thesloppy tuna.com) for the past two summers. This could be because the beach-side bar it only a mile and a half from Ditch Plains (THE legendary surfing beach). Or maybe it's the "come as you are" dress code, which does not exclude sand in your shorts.
