With private golf clubs falling into financial trouble since business executives suffered in the recession, the town-owned Harbor Links Golf Club in Port Washington is going after corporate memberships.

That is unusual for a municipal course, but the par-72 Harbor Links has a spiffy grill room and other amenities that give it the look of a private club. And so general manager Don Zauner has started a "Good Neighbor" program that offers executives and employees of companies in North Hempstead tee times at Harbor Links for $83 a round -- the same fee town residents pay on a weekend. Weekend fees for nonresidents are $113.

On May 4 Harbor Links held a dinner to acquaint employees at Pall Corp., the filtration manufacturer that just moved to Port Washington, with the offer. Another event is planned for June 8, when employees and executives of about 50 other companies located in a nearby corporate park will be invited.

Zauner said the club's tee sheets are often full, but "there are times when we're not. The corporate parks are right down the road. A lot of the private clubs" are in financial trouble. "But all the members still want to play golf."
