'Harborfields family' comes together in spirit of homecoming

For the first time all night, the crowd of more than 600 students and faculty members at Harborfields High School in Greenlawn held a collective breath as they awaited the announcement of this year’s homecoming king and queen.

When seniors Carli Clementi and Tanner Morrow were announced as the winners, the whole room burst into applause loud enough to shake the building. Two of their classmates, 17-year-olds Jessica Schilling and Alex Kantor, ceremoniously placed crowns on their heads as the applause swelled to a roar.

The crowning on Friday night was just one of several special moments for the Harborfield community as it celebrated the annual homecoming football game this weekend. Students participated in a community bonfire, street parade and a school carnival, all leading up to the game on Saturday afternoon against Deer Park High School.

“My favorite part of homecoming is the parade, because we get to show the whole community what we do, building the floats and painting our faces,” said Iman Lee, a senior at the school. “The whole community is here and it’s just such a Harborfields family.”

Students differed in which homecoming weekend event they liked the most, but one thing they did agree on was the importance of Greenlawn’s community spirit.

“Unlike any other football game its not just about the football fans, its not just about the football players,” said junior Patrick Godfrey. “It’s really about the whole school coming together for one cause and fighting for our community.”
