Columbus discovered Suffolk County last night as Bria Hartley and Tobias Harris showed why they belonged in the showcase game for the top high school basketball players in the country - the McDonald's All-American game.
Unfortunately for the Tennessee-bound Harris, he was unable to play in the second half because he suffered a broken toe in the first half, when he scored 13 points. Harris hit a long, straightaway rainbow three, a one-handed tip-in and two fast-break dunks. Viewers of the ESPN telecast learned of Harris' injury in the final minutes of the West's 107-104 victory over the East in the boys half of the doubleheader from Value City Arena. Cameras caught Harris on the end of the bench, with his foot in a boot. He had come out of the locker room on crutches.
Harris had an outstanding three days of practice in Columbus, prompting ESPN analyst Jay Williams to say early in the broadcast, "He's very smooth and he's such a hard worker. Bruce Pearl is getting a good one at Tennessee."
So is Geno Auriemma at Connecticut. North Babylon's Hartley scored 17 points, 15 in the second half, including three long-range three-pointers, in the East's 84-75 loss to the West. "I was a little cold in the first half but in the second half, I just played my game," Hartley said. "If I hit shots, I hit shots. It was a great experience, especially visiting the McDonald's charities."
