THE BUDGET

The district is proposing a $94,024,689 budget, a 1.27 percent increase over the current budget of $92,842,044. The tax levy for the district would be $72,061,727 a 3.24 percent increase over the current levy of $69,798,216.

The average home assessed at $60,452 in Islip would pay $5,622 in school taxes, an increase of 3.21 percent over the current $5,447. The average house in Smithtown assessed at $6,000 would pay $4,720, an increase of 3.24 percent over the current $4,572.

Teachers will receive a 3 percent salary increase as well as a 3 percent step increase this year.

The district is calling for cutting 23.7 positions - three administrators, a manager, 12.7 full-time teachers (or equivalent), a guidance counselor, five teaching assistants and a maintenance position.

Also on the ballot is a proposition to use $1.2 million in capital reserve funds to replace the 43-year-old heating and ventilation systems at the Bretton Woods Elementary School, which would have no impact on the tax rate.
