Havens pitches third no-hitter for Eastport-South Manor
Catherine Havens pitched a no-hitter with one walk and 12 strikeouts Tuesday to lead Eastport-South Manor (13-3) over Harborfields, 13-0, in League V. The walk came in the fourth inning of what was the junior's third no-hitter this season. Chelsea Kull went 4-for-5 with four RBIs.
It was ESM coach Steve Giacolone's 300th victory. "I've been blessed," said Giacolone, in his 24th season. "The girls knew about it, but I tried to keep it quiet. It's an accomplishment, but it's a lot of years and a lot of great teams. It's through a lot of people that I've been able to achieve this."
Whitman 12, Sachem North 0: Senior Christine Locido notched her ninth shutout of the season and 500th career strikeout for Whitman (13-4) in League II. She tossed a five inning one-hitter with six strikeouts and went 2-for-3 with a homer, three RBIs and a run. Bay Shore 13, Northport 1: Senior Liz Weber had a career-high 18 strikeouts, allowing three hits and one earned run for Bay Shore (19-0) in League II. Weber was 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Taylor McGowan was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs and Amber Fogarty was 2-for-4.Half Hollow Hills West 3, Smithtown West 2: Morgan Hughes hit an RBI single up the middle to score Alyssa Bitsimis from third in the bottom of the seventh to win it for Hills West (9-6) in League IV. Jessica Kleet scored on Diana Kontos' triple in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score at 2. Melissa Kelly went 3-for-4. Catherine Heacox was 3-for-4 for Smithtown West.Bayport-Blue Point 12, Glenn 6: Meg Brewer was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and two RBIs for Bayport-Blue Point (13-2) in League VII. Sam Capobianco was 3-for-4 with her 12th home run for Glenn.St. Anthony's 10, St. Mary's 0: St. Anthony's (17-0) finished undefeated for the first time in team history, according to coach Mike Massa. Marilyn Freeman had four RBIs and Marilyn LaRocca struck out nine in earning the win.
Our Lady of Mercy 7, Holy Trinity 6: Nicole Reda hit a one-out triple in the bottom of the fifth to score Gabby Tagios from second base and give Our Lady of Mercy (7-10) a 7-5 lead in CHSAA. Reda was 2-for-2 and Stephanie Viggiano went 2-for-4 with a home run. Samantha Sauer struck out 11 in the complete game.
Valley Stream South 16, Lynbrook 3: Samantha Howley was 4-for-5 with a triple, home run, four runs and five RBIs for Valley Stream South (10-9) in non-league. Jessica Liberato went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
BOYS TENNISSuffolk Division II boys individual championship at East Islip. In the singles finals, No. 1 Tyler Hoffman (Sayville) defeated No. 2 Matt Racanelli, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. In the consolation, No. 4 Matt Cohen (Bay Shore) defeated No. 3 Tyler Danzi (Central Islip) by default. In the semifinals, Hoffman defeated Cohen, 6-0, 7-5, and Racanelli defeated Danzi, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
Suffolk Division IV individual tournament at Shoreham-Wading River. In the singles finals, No. 2 Jeremy Dubin (Southamtpon) defeated No. 1 Rich Sipala (Ross), 6-4, 6-3. In the consolation, No. 5 Henry Lee (Ross) defeated No. 3 Eric Sumanary (Longwood), 7-5, 6-1. In the doubles championship, No. 1 Christian Thienel and Greg Kandell (Westhampton) defeated No. 2 Spencer Kuzon and Trip Tuff (Ross), 6-4, 6-3. In the consolation, Mike Hammond and Reid Paoletta (Southampton) defeated No. 4 Tom Gallo and Matt Miller (Southampton), 6-3, 6-4.
Manhasset 5, Bellmore JFK 2: Andrew Chin and Sai Senthil-Kumar defeated Tyler Smith and Darwin Shen in fourth doubles, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4, for Manhasset (7-5) in Conference 2A.
