Hawks top Cavs, move a game in front of Knicks
ATLANTA -- Mike Scott ended a scoring slump with 26 points as the Atlanta Hawks beat the Cleveland Cavaliers, 117-98, last night to move a game in front of the Knicks for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
The Knicks (33-44), who entered the night percentage points ahead of the Hawks (33-42), lost to the Washington Wizards, 90-89.
Atlanta, which had lost seven of eight, got a strong game from Jeff Teague, who had 20 points and 12 assists.
The Hawks never trailed and set a season high with 39 first-quarter points.
"All year and under a lot of different circumstances, we've said we like our group and they're resilient," Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said.
The loss was costly to the Cavaliers (31-46), who fell three games behind Atlanta, and Cavaliers coach Mike Brown was unhappy to see his team struggle with so much on the line.
Said Brown, "They kicked our behind from the beginning to the end."
