While the coach is away, the players will play.

St. Anthony's Annie Heagerty didn't think coach Corinne Lomangino would have a problem with her two fancy goals. Lomangino missed yesterday's game at Kellenberg because of pregnancy-related sickness, according to assistant coach Tara Nolan. But, like the rest of her team, Heagerty was feeling her oats without her rigid coach pacing the sideline.

Heagerty, who also had two assists, scored both of her goals in the second half of St. Anthony's 17-8 CHSAA win at Kellenberg.

The first was a one-timer off a feed from Shanna Brady with 21:30 to play that gave the Friars an 11-4 lead. The second was an over-the-shoulder flip that made it 14-6 9:50 later.

"I just figured what the heck," Heagerty said of her showtime scores. "I just knew we needed goals, so I said, 'I'm just going to take this.' That's how we really play."

Heagerty acknowledged St. Anthony's (10-3, 6-0 CHSAA) wasn't at its peak, especially after a draining loss at New Jersey powerhouse Moorestown on Saturday. The Friars also easily handled Kellenberg, 15-5, only six days prior.

"Everyone was worn out from the game over the weekend," Heagerty said. "And we kind of had the mind-set that [when we defeated] these guys before, we fooled around too much. We played really sloppy."

Those feelings were exactly what acting head coach Nolan was trying to avoid.

"We always tell the team it doesn't matter who you play," Nolan said. "We pride ourselves on not taking any team for granted. We came off a really intense weekend and we didn't connect the dots [Monday]."

Clearly, in a nine-goal win, it can't be all bad. The Friars held Kellenberg (7-6, 1-5) scoreless for the first 14:36 before the first of two goals from the Thunderbirds' Lindsay Marino made it 4-2.

St. Anthony's scored four of the next five goals, including Chrissy Schreiber's goal on an assist from Lauren Schwalje with 7.4 seconds left in the first half.

Kerrin Maurer and Casey Madden each scored three goals for the Friars, and Tori Holland made eight saves.

St. Anthony's holds a two-game lead in the CHSAA with three games to play. Its next game is Wednesday against Holy Trinity. It is uncertain whether Lomangino will be back on the field, but her team will certainly be looking out for her in school.

Heagerty said of her coach: "She really puts us in our place. Not that coach Nolan doesn't, but it's a little different."
