Hearing on fixing Huntington Superfund site
The state Department of Environmental Conservation will hold a public meeting next week on a proposed plan to remedy a Superfund site under a Huntington dry cleaner’s shop.
The meeting, which will be held March 15 at 7 p.m. at the Cold Spring Harbor Library and Environmental Center, will consider a cleanup proposal for Country Cleaners at 410 W. Main St.
A chemical used in dry cleaning had been found in the soil near a pipe coming from the building, and in a nearby storm drain, according to the state. While the owners of the site cleaned the drain and removed two inches of soil from the affected area, the state is planning to further remediate the site.
On-site dry cleaning at the location stopped in 2007, according to the state.
Written public comment on this project will also be accepted until March 30; comments should be emailed to jgjones@gw.dec.state.ny.us.
