For the past 10 years the nonprofit Long Island Works Coalition, which focuses on workforce development, held an Internship / Student Job Fair that drew an average of 1,200 college and high school students and nearly 100 businesses.

Not this year.

The coalition, located in Melville, lacks a major underwriter or the premium sponsors to help pay for the event.

"If any of you feel you are in a position to help with this or can refer us to a benefactor . . . we would welcome your call as soon as possible," the coalition's executive director, Cheryl Davidson, said in an e-mail to supporters.

The event, Davidson wrote, "was immensely popular . . . because it was free to attendees and companies paid a minimal fee to recruit some of the best and brightest local talent."

The coalition's e-mail address is info@liworks.org
