Hempstead celebration remembers single moms
The ABBA Leadership Center will be holding a pre-Mother’s Day celebration to remember single-parent mothers in and around Hempstead Village.
The nonprofit faith-based organization in Hempstead, in partnership with community and faith-based organizations, law enforcement officials and governmental agencies, will host the event at the Judea United Baptist Church, 83 Greenwich St. in Hempstead, Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. The group is expecting more than 350 mothers, officials said.
“This project is designed to reach out to single-parent mothers, who in all probability, will not receive flowers or the traditional Mother’s Day appreciation gift that the average mother receives on this occasion, and they are rarely taken out for the traditional Mother’s Day dinner,” evangelist Reginald Benjamin, executive director of the center, said in a statement.
Each mother will be treated to a two-course dinner, a flowering plant, a gift basket and a bag of groceries to help prepare a family meal. The celebration will also include live Gospel music and poetry performances, as well as other activities. In addition, representatives from health and human service agencies will be at information tables to provide resources to low-income mothers and their families.
Interested single mothers must register by Wednesday. For more information, call Reginald Benjamin from the center at 516-398-7484.
