The Adams Court Tenants Association will be giving out free ice cream to children in the area Saturday and celebrating the start of a new academic school year.

The event is “to show the children here that yes, they do matter,” said Rana Timmons, treasurer of the association started in 2008. “We just want to focus on education and want the kids to make a promise to do well in school.”

The fourth annual back-to-school event will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in Campbell Park, 5 Evans Ave., between Elm and Linden Avenues in Hempstead Village. The non-profit community organization will also raffle stuffed backpacks and have a jump rope contest.

For more information or to find out how to volunteer, call Timmons at 516-360-7873.
