Hempstead presenting revival plan to public

Hempstead Village residents will have the opportunity Thursday to learn about the plan to revitalize the downtown.

The project developers — Renaissance Downtowns, based in Plainview, and UrbanAmerica, a New York City real estate investment firm — hired by the village in January will present their master conceptual plan for the Main Street Project during a special meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday at the Hempstead Public Library, 115 Nichols Ct.

Mayor Wayne J. Hall Sr., the board of trustees and the village’s Community Development Agency are hosting the meeting.

The development team and village officials envision a combination of residential units including condominiums, co-ops and rental apartments ranging from studios to town houses that will accommodate a range of income levels. It would also include a hotel, a mix of shops, open spaces, parking and entertainment.

The project, projected to take about a decade to complete, is expected to create more than 3,000 permanent jobs and 10,000 construction jobs, developers and village officials said.

The projected cost of the public-private partnership is about $2 billion, which would be paid by contributions from the developers and private-property owners, tax credits, bonds and grants.
