The Hempstead Town Animal Shelter is hosting two seminars to find volunteers for the pet fostering program that would assist homeless animals.

The free seminars led by animal shelter staff are being held on Thursday at 7 p.m. and on April 14, at 11 a.m. The seminars will be held in the Old Courtroom at Hempstead Town Hall, on the second floor of 350 Front St. in Hempstead.

Seminar attendees will meet current volunteers who have animals in foster care. The free seminar will run about 90 minutes, said Dolores Stormo, the shelter's volunteer coordinator.

The animal shelter’s Little One Fostering Program provides a foster home with training, food, supplies and medical care for the duration of the animal’s stay. Foster volunteers would help animals that need socialization or are having trouble adapting to kennel life, Stormo said.

At the end of the animal’s stay with the foster family, the cat or dog will return to the shelter, where the animal will wait to be adopted by a family that would provide it with a permanent home. Foster families also have the option to adopt the animals.

To register or get more information about fostering a pet, call the animal shelter at 516-785-5220 or email Stormo at dstormo@tohmail.org.
