Hempstead Town construction to be allowed on weekends to help Sandy victims

The Hempstead Town Board on Tuesday unanimously approved a resolution temporarily allowing construction on weekends in order residents rebuilding their homes in the wake of superstorm Sandy.

The resolution called for temporarily suspending enforcement of a town code regulation that outlines permissible hours for conducting structural work on buildings.

The permanent code states structural work is allowed from 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays, except in a case of urgent necessity. The board’s vote suspended the regulation for 180 days to permit structural work between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

The 180-day suspension went into effect immediately after the board adopted the resolution.

“It is in the public interest for the Town to provide measured relief from that requirement in order to facilitate conduct and expeditious competition of building projects in the wake of superstorm Sandy,” the resolution stated.
