Volunteers with Hempstead Town’s Department of Senior Enrichment this week will start helping senior citizens file their annual income tax returns.

The free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, held at senior centers and libraries throughout the town until the April 17 filing deadline, is offered in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service. All VITA tax preparers are resident volunteers trained by both agencies.

Seniors who attend one of the sessions must bring their 2010 tax return, W-2 form, 1099 forms (for interest, dividends, capital gains, pensions, IRAS and annuities), 2011 general and school tax receipts, STAR exemption records, social security cards and photo identification, officials said.

Required documents also include proof of itemized expenses (if applicable), such as medical and prescription bills, mortgage interest, charitable contributions and/or insurance premiums. Residents may be asked to complete additional paperwork, officials said.

For the VITA program schedule, call the Senior Enrichment Department at 516-485-8100 or visit the town website at http://toh.li/senior-enrichment/volunteer-income-tax-assistance-vita.
