Hempstead Village launches Project Safe Surrender

Hempstead Village launched its first Project Safe Surrender at a local church Saturday during which more than six dozen people with outstanding arrest warrants turned themselves in.
Village Court Justice Tanya Hobson-Williams, in partnership with The Calvary Tabernacle Church, will host a second session of the event Saturday, March 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The event will be held at the church on 78 N. Franklin St. in Hempstead Village.
The project is meant to offer the opportunity to individuals with warrants to turn themselves in to clergy and law enforcement, and have their warrants lifted and their cases adjudicated on the spot, in a safe environment.
Anyone with an outstanding warrant from Hempstead Village only will be able to appear without fear of arrest, have their warrant vacated and tickets resolved. Warrants for other villages, counties or towns will not be addressed.
Hempstead Village code violations that will be addressed include among several infractions, traffic violations, building complaints, disorderly conduct, trespassing and drinking in public.
