Not much was expected from Herricks this season and the team is off to an 8-0 start after a 39-34 win over Hicksville today. Sophomore Alison Ricchiuti is having a great season and with Hicksville trying to rally in the final quarter, she had eight of her 14 points in the final quarter.

“She scored when we needed it,” Herricks coach Glenn Lavey said.

Alissa Kokinakis was responsible for guarding Caitlyn Garger, one of the top sophomores on Long Island, and limited her to 16 points. Kokinakis didn’t make the top junior varsity team as a freshman and did so the following year. She was on varsity last season and didn’t play much, but has been a key defender this season.

“She made Garger work hard for those points,” Lavey. “She is emblematic of what this team is about. For us, this was a great win.”

The big test will be against Nassau county favorite Baldwin. Lavey said he has heard about Baldwin’s great defensive shell drill it utilizes in practice. Lavey is concerned, but said he thinks he has a way to crack it when the teams meet one week from Tuesday.
