Heuer gets touchdown record in Oceanside win
Tyler Heuer went 6-for-12 for 189 yards with three touchdowns and an interception for No. 2 Oceanside in a 49-14 home win over Massapequa Saturday in the first round of the Nassau Conference I playoffs.
Heuer has 33 touchdown passes this season, the most in Nassau history. He came into the game tied with Randy Mills, a 2003 graduate of Freeport. Gene Garay had five receptions for 183 yards and three touchdowns. He has 1,051 receiving yards on the season, a Nassau record, and 14 touchdown catches, tied for the all-time county mark.
Nick Sherry returned an interception 26 yards for a touchdown and a fumble 31 yards for a score. This is the first time Oceanside (8-1) has made the semifinals since the current playoff format was introduced in 1984.
"The kids were real cognizant of what's going on," Oceanside coach Rob Blount said. "They knew they had enough talent and skill to get there."
After starting the regular season 7-0, the Sailors dropped a 41-38 game to Freeport in the regular-season finale. Said Blount: "The kids showed a lot of adversity fighting back from a tough loss."
Oceanside will play No. 3 Farmingdale at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Hofstra in a Conference I semifinal. No. 7 Massapequa finishes the season 4-5.Freeport 48, Baldwin 0: Dan Olivier ran for 151 yards and two touchdowns for No. 1 Freeport on Friday night. Isaiah Barnes was 3-for-3 for 113 yards and two touchdowns. Freeport (8-1) will play No. 5 Syosset at 4 p.m. on Thursday at Hofstra in a Conference I semifinal. No. 8 Baldwin finishes 4-5.
