Hicksville street revamp funds shift to Glen Head

Stimulus funds slated for streetscape improvements in Hicksville have been shifted to build a new gateway park in Glen Head.

At today’s regular meeting, the Oyster Bay Town Board approved a resolution that revises the grant agreement officials entered into last year. The $90,000 that was to go to Herzog Place in downtown Hicksville — near the Route 106/107 split — will instead help create Walnut Parklet at Glen Cove and Walnut avenues in Glen Head. The resolution also added $42,762 to the cost of the new project, for a total of $132,762.

The park will replace a long-abandoned gas station at one of Glen Head’s more prominent entryways.

As for Herzog Place, town spokeswoman Phyllis Barry said shop owners said they feared planned paving work, including decorative brick sidewalks, would quickly deteriorate with the area’s heavy truck traffic.

The town now awaits approval by Nassau County, which administered the federal grant money, to switch the projects.
